- Department of Consumer Studies successfully concluded the 2023 Consumer Studies Day and the signing ceremony for the Consumer Studies Development Fund. On July 21st (Friday), the Department of Consumer Science held the 2023 Consumer Science Day at the Do Sang-yong Advanced Lecture Hall in the Humanities and Social Sciences Campus Management Building. The event was attended by Kim Geun-se, the Dean of the College of Social Sciences, as well as Honorary Professor Kim Ki-ok, Alumni Association President Yeo Jeong-hee (a professor in the Department of Consumer Science at Inha University), and professors from the Department of Consumer Science (Lee Sung-rim, Jung Jae-eun, Hwang Hye-seon, Park Tae-young, and Nam Su-jeong), along with doctoral-level researchers and around 50 graduate students who gathered to share their research achievements. During the event, outstanding graduate students presented their research findings and engaged in an international academic seminar where they discussed their work with overseas scholars. The debate featured the participation of Professor Swarn Chatterjee from Georgia State University, who is also the President of the American Association for Consumer Research, and Professor Eunjin Kwak from the University of Wisconsin. The scholars discussed various research outcomes related to consumer behavior, including financial knowledge, medical consumption, and consumer text mining. Dean Kim Geun-se expressed, "I am delighted to be invited to this meaningful event, where we share the research achievements and contributions of the Department of Consumer Science," and Honorary Professor Kim Ki-ok passionately remarked, "I hope that we continue to actively ponder the societal mission and academic vision of consumer science and become proactive researchers in the field." During the event, in celebration of Consumer Science Day, Honorary Professor Kim Ki-ok donated 10 million won to the Consumer Science Development Fund, while the Graduate Alumni Association, current students, and faculty members pledged a total of 23.7 million won in donations. Starting with last year's 10 million won contribution by Honorary Professor Ji Young-suk, the love and support for the Department of Consumer Science from Honorary Professors, alumni, and members of the department continue to grow. Department Chair Park Tae-young expressed gratitude for the contributions made by Honorary Professors and emphasized the significance of the development fund, encouraging current students to devote themselves to their studies. Officials from the Department of Consumer Science stated that in the future, Consumer Science Day events will be held as international research seminars where department alumni, graduate students, honorary professors, overseas scholars, and others can come together to share research achievements.

- Social Innovation Convergence Major - Department of Consumer Science, Successful Completion of Invited Guest Lecture by Overseas Scholar. The Social Innovation Convergence Major and the Department of Consumer Science successfully completed an invited guest lecture by an overseas scholar on July 21st (Friday) at the Humanities and Social Sciences Campus Management Building. The lecture was conducted both online and offline with the presence of Justin Paul, a professor from the University of Puerto Rico, the University of Reading, and the Indian Institute of Management. Professor Justin Paul currently serves as the Editor-in-Chief of the International Journal of Consumer Studies (IF: 9.9), which is ranked among the top 15% academic journals in the field of management. Additionally, he has held the position of Associate Editor for other prestigious academic journals, including the Journal of Business Research (IF 11.3, top 10%) and the European Management Journal (IF 7.5, top 20%). He has conducted numerous research studies on systematic literature reviews, meta-analysis, consumer satisfaction, sustainable consumption, and more. His impactful contributions have led to multiple recognitions as a Highly Cited Researcher (HCR), solidifying his position as one of the most influential researchers worldwide. Professor Justin Paul delivered a lecture on "The Art of Writing Different Types of Systematic Literature Reviews," covering topics such as △review paper writing techniques △meta-analysis △big data-based literature reviews △considerations for publishing papers in renowned international academic journals, and he generously shared advice for future social science researchers. The invited guest lecture by Professor Justin Paul was organized by Professor Park Tae-young (Department of Consumer Science/Social Innovation Convergence Major), and it was attended by researchers from our university, including professors, researchers, and students, as well as scholars and researchers from other universities and abroad, both in-person and online. The Social Innovation Convergence Major and the Department of Consumer Science announced that they will continue to host seminars featuring internationally renowned scholars at the editor-in-chief level. This initiative aims to enhance students' international experience and provide world-class educational programs.

- Sungkyunkwan University Team Wins the 6th "Future Political Leaders Legislative Training Course" Debate Competition.
- The team from Sungkyunkwan University, led by Lee Jae-woo (Political Science and Diplomacy Department Student Council President, Class of '19) and Kim Dae-hee (Class of '19), emerged victorious in the 6th "Future Political Leaders Legislative Training Course" held by the National Assembly Secretariat (Secretary-General Lee Kwang-jae) at the National Assembly Goseong Training Institute in Goseong County, Gangwon Special Autonomous Province from June 26th to 28th, for a duration of two nights and three days. This year marks the 6th edition of the program, which began in 2017. A total of 96 students from 10 universities, including Korea University, Kookmin University, Seoul National University, Sungkyunkwan University, Sookmyung Women's University, Sungsil University, Ajou University, Incheon National University, Hankuk University of Foreign Studies, and Hanshin University (in alphabetical order), participated in the event. The debate competition, which served as the foundation for the training course, had the main theme as "The 87th National Assembly: A Continuation of the 87-year System or a Closure of the 87-year System? (The Role of the National Assembly Beyond the Current Constitution)." Team A debated the topic "Is the 10th Constitution Immutable and Irreversible?", while Team B discussed "Does Regionalism Relate to the Single-Member District System?" Six teams advanced to the finals, where they engaged in spirited debates on the topic "Politics as a Comprehensive Art to End the 87-year System." Furthermore, there were subcommittee discussions on the topic "Approaches for the National Assembly to Become the Center of State Affairs." Participating students held team discussions until late in the evening each day to find answers to the topic and presented their thoughts using various innovative methods, including theatrical approaches. The team from Sungkyunkwan University demonstrated outstanding performance throughout the training course and achieved remarkable success by winning the overall championship according to the evaluation of the judging panel.

- The College of Social Sciences held the 5th Suseon Forum on November 10th, 2021. 20 professors and Dean Bi-Hwan KIM of the College gathered offline and online at the forum. Prof. Chang-Geun HAN from the Department of Social Welfare, brought an interesting topic of 'The young generation’s sense of community: How is it different from other age generations' and had a presentation and discussion with the participating scholars. Under the theme of “Community and Social Sciences,” the College of Social Sciences will be held Suseon Forum monthly by next year.

- College of Social Sciences – Signed an Internship Agreement with UNESCO Korean Committee
- College of Social Sciences – Signed anInternship Agreement with UNESCO Korean Committee The College of Social Science signed an agreement with the UNESCO Korean Committee on November 1st for the student internship exchange. UNESCO is the only UN organization, which has a national committee system under UNESCO Charter to promote activities of UN member nations. In addition, 199 national committees around the world cooperate with UNESCO-related organizations, including the government and civil society, to conduct the regional and international program in their own countries as well as to provide information and advice for UNESCO activities. Through the agreement, students from the College of Social Science gained opportunities to participate in various activities held by the UNESCO Korean Committee which has been carrying out variety of domestic and foreign projects in UNESCO activities since its establishment in 1954. This agreement was signed in writing, and internship trainees are expected to be recruited from September 1st, 2022.

- Prof. Suho Bae Speaks on 'Traditions of Local Communities in History' in 4th Suseon Forum
- In the fourth Suseon Forum, held on October 7, 2021, Prof. Suho Bae from Department of Public Administration and GSG is invited as a speaker to introduce traditions of local communities in history: focus on the case of Jungpyeong village community in Jinan-gun Seongsu-myeon of Jeolla Province’. About 20 professors attends the forum online and offline despite their busy semester schedule. - 3rd Suseon Forum held on Sept. 8
- The College of Social Sciences held the 3rd Suseon Forum on September 8th, 2021. 15 professors and Dean Bi-Hwan KIM of the College gathered online at the forum. Prof. Seong Lim LEE from the Department of Consumer Science, brought an interesting topic of 'Intra-household Gender Earning Gap and Food Expenditure' and had a presentation and discussion with the participating scholars. To promote communication and exchange among faculty members, the College had held the two forums in the first semester of 2021 academic year and will be scheduled to hold a monthly-based academic forum continuously under the theme of 'Community and Social Science', till the first semester of 2022. Consequently, we anticipate that these forums will help revitalize a sustainable academic community in the College and professors find out research topics to engage jointly. For your reference, we put a bit of the past two forums held in the first semester as follows, *1st Suseon Forum: held on May 12 and Prof. Hoon Seok CHOI (Dept. of Psychology) presented on 'A New Model of Individualism-Collectivism that Suggests Us What to Do within and between Groups' *2nd Suseon Forum: on June 10th and Prof. Sou Hyun JANG (Dept. of Sociology) presented on 'Community-based Participatory Research to Promote Health among Immigrants and Racial/Ethnic Minorities"

Prof. Jeong-woo Koo of the Department of Sociology will open a new course titled “The Age of Upheaval” in this semester, collaborating with the Chaired Prof. Jared Diamond, the author of Guns, Germs, and Steel. In this class, Prof. Diamond’s lectures include ‘What factors promoted the rise and fall of civilization?’, ‘How does a society choose success or failure?’ and ‘How does a society escape from crisis?’ Examining key questions, we look back on the past and present of civilizations and the world, and look into the future. The main lectures will be conducted by Prof. Jeong-woo Koo, who received the 2017 SKKU Teaching Award and is known to the public through tvN
, and Prof. Diamond will give two special lectures being held online in real time on Nov. 9 and Nov. 30 at Business Hall Theater, and anyone can attend. This course covers the origins of the modern economic and political system, the rise and fall of the state and society, and a new civilization and a sustainable future by integrating Prof. Diamond’s civilizational and environmental perspectives with Prof. Koo’s historical and sociological ones. In addition, Prof. Diamond’s trilogy will be the main thematic structure and dealing with closely related social change issues. In particular, it is supposed to examine the changes in the history of civilization related to the 4th Industrial Revolution and Transhumanism, and reflect on what these macroscopic social changes imply for the future of Korea. The class will be delivered in a mixture of pre-recorded online and real time streaming at 13:30-14:45 on Tuesday, 12:00-1315 on Thursday. -

- Prof. Gi Heon Kwon, Dean of the Graduate School, who is affiliated in the Department of Public Administration at Sungkyunkwan University, offers an online lecture for graduate program titled, “Public Managers and the Policy Process”, in collaboration with Victoria University of Wellington in New Zealand for the fall semester of 2021. [Photo of Victoria University of Wellington] The online class will be held every Friday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and are jointly conducted by Professor Kwon and Professor Verna Smith. The lecture will cover the policy cases in Korea, New Zealand, and Indonesia along with policy studies such as policy making and policy process. The lecture is supported by the KF lectures (Professor Hyung-jun Park) of Graduate School of Governance at SKKU. In Korea, graduate students from the Global MPA program (20 foreign graduate students through KOICA program), and SKKU’s graduate students will join the lecture. In foreign countries, graduate students and government officials from Victoria University of Wellington and graduate students from the University of Gaja Mada (Based in Yogyakara) in Indonesia will participate in real-time. At the School of Government, Victoria University of Wellington, this online lecture will be provided to graduate students and government officials. Victoria University of Wellington was founded in 1897 as the national university that is located in Wellington, the capital city. It is a prestigious national university named after Queen Victoria of England, and has traditionally produced many talents in the fields of law, administration, arts and music. Professor Verna Smith, a policy expert at Victoria University in New Zealand, is known as the foremost authority in the field of political science and wrote a book called 『Bargaining Power: Health Policymaking from England and New Zealand』, which compares British and New Zealand health care policies. In collaboration with the office of International Relations, SKKU’s graduate school plans to expand international cooperation with Victoria University of Wellington. On August 25 (Wed), the personnel from the two universities held an online meeting to discuss measures to expand collaboration such as student/professor exchanges, MOU, dual degree, etc, and decided to implement it in the future.
