This class aims to understand US foreign policy in general and US-Asia relations in particular as academic subjects. In the first part, we will analyze the foundations and history of American grand strategy through the lens of International Relations theory. In the second part, the topic of US-East Asia relations will be investigated after exploring the decision-making processes of American foreign policy.

This is a survey course for the major characteristics of Chinese foreign policy Recent debates on the rise of China and its implications will also be covered. This class observes history, structure, characters of modern Chinese foreign policy. Especially, it is composed of five sections 1) overall introduction of Chinese foreign policy, 2) decision making process, domestic restraints and diplomatic trends, 3) discussions of key determinants of Chinese foreign policy, 4) a comparison of security and economic issues in Chinese foreign policy, 5) overviews of bilateral relations and the Third World and regional community 6) China's policy toward Korean peninsula.

This course examines the domestic politics and government in democratic countries with emphasis on political institutions. Students can learn the theoretical issues of political institutions and decision-making process and understand how political institutions both constrain decision makers and provide them with opportunities. This course provides students with a framework for understanding major political outcomes.

This lecture deals with the dynamic interrelationship between constitution and politics, which has been one of the most important theoretical issues in modern political theory. While it is necessary to understand the fundamental characteristics and contents of the constitutional law of a country in order to shed proper light on the nature and procedural characteristics of its politics, it is also necessary to understand both the historical political process through which the relevant people established the constitution and the basic common values reflected in the constitution in order to understand the characteristics and the limits of the constitution. In this general theoretical framework, the following topics are specifically dealt with: the meaning and the kinds of constitution, theories of constitutional interpretation, basic rights, the separation of power, the interrelationship among constitutive political ideologies of Korean constitution and their harmonious integration and so on.

This course provide an overview of the history of Inter-Korean Relations, concentrating on the period from the division (1948) to the present. First half of the course focuses on North Korean Politics, including the birth of North Korean regime, structure of North Korean power-elite group, and the changing course of North Korean society. The other half of the course reviews how inter-Korean relations have developed so far. Case studies are made on inter-Korean dialogue, confidence-building measures, North Korean provocation, North Korean nuclear issue, inter-Korean economic cooperation, inter-Korean socio-cultural exchanges. Finally, issues concerning Korean unification will be discussed, including unification policy and unification diplomacy.

This course offers a focused view on how domestic politics affect international relations, and how international relations affect domestic politics. We analyze how the political, economic, and social conditions within states affect foreign policy and international relations. We also examine how international politics affects domestic political leadership, policies, cleavages, and even institutions. To this end, we focus on several distinct substantive areas, including the use of force, international trade, and participations in international organizations. You will learn the basic analytic tools necessary to understand and explain a variety of international and domestic phenomena.

This course explores foreign policy of modern state Japan which emerged with the conclusion of the second world war. Major international theories will be examined and compared to understand how Japanese security interests are defined and pursued. Discussions on key agenda of the US-Japanese alliance, China-Japan relations, and Korea-Japan relations will be followed by the ROK’s desirable policy options toward Japan.
