This course discusses various theories that have emerged historically in the West about the state and government power. From antiquity through the Middle Ages to the modern ages, various ideas and suggestions concerning the state and political power emerged and developed in the West, still informing our ways of conceptualizing and criticizing political actions and institutions. This course aims at in-depth discussions on future politics while tracing the trajectories of those ideas and suggestions.

An examination of the development of political thought from ancient Greece to the Renaissance and the Reformation. Readings include Plato, Aristotle, Cicero, St. Augustine, St. Aquinas, Marsilius of Padua, William of Ockam, Luther, Calvin, Machiavelli and Bodin. The course will focus on such themes as the nature of politics, justice and political knowledge and the formation and relation of "public" and "private" spheres of life. Lecture and discussion. One term paper is required.

Comparative politics of South East Asian countries such as the Phillipines, Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia, and Vietnam, stressing the impact of colonial residues, internal conflicts, and the processes and consequences of democratic and economic reforms.

An examination of some current controversies over the nature of political thinking. The course will focus on the "politics of theory", on the interests, institutions and forms of political life that have shaped the current debate. The relation between power and knowledge and the connection between personal identity and cultures are, for instance, two major themes. Readings may include Schmitt, Strauss, Arendt, Habermas, Derrida, Foucault, Lyotard, Rawls and MacIntyre. Lecture and discussion. One term paper is required.
PSD5013 Seminar on east Asian Political Thought 3 6 Major Master/Doctor 1-4 - No
An examination of the development of political thought from ancient China through contemporary East Asia. Special emphasis will be given to the relation between views of nature and purpose of political order. Comparative understanding of traditional canons in relation to Western political thought may be wxperimented. Readings include traditional canons of Confucianism, Taoism and Legalism. Lecture and discussion. One term paper is required.

An examination of normative problems of democracy as they arise within both Western democratic societies and South Korea. Topics include the meaning and justification of democracy, political representation, civil rights, education, the relation between equality and freedom and democratic citizneship. Readings include theories of representative democracy and perhaps contemporary studies of participatory electronic democracy. Lecture and discussion. One term paper is required.

The subjects of this class are the division of world capitalism into core and periphery, recent collapse of communist world, and the emergence of and changes in the global capitalism as the consequences of the expansion of the market economy. Issues and concepts around 'Globalization' will provide the fundamentals of recent changes in the contemporary capitalist world system.

With such questions in mind, this course assesses comparative theories of political parties and how they apply across different countries.

Introduction to the study of western capitalist democracies, communist regimes, and authoritarian states. How do these types of state differ? What factors enhance the emergence of one type of state versus another? What factors explain the rise and collapse of democracies? What is the relationship between political development and economic development? These questions will be addressed through theoretical readings and case studies.

An eximination of the development of political thought from 17th through 20th centuries. Readings include Hobbes, Locke, Rousseau, Kant, Hegel, Bentham, Mill, Marx and Lenin. The course will focus on such themes as the nature of modernity and liberalism, conceptions of the nation-state, the individual, freedom, justice, equality, politics and authority. Lecture and discussion. One term paper is required.
PSD5047 Korean Politcs and Leadership 3 6 Major Master/Doctor 1-4 - No
The objectives of this course are to introduce you the most influential theoretical approaches of leadership to the study of Korean politics and to apply and evaluate these approaches in a series of historical case studies of leadership and Korean politics. Students will study real leaders in selected cases, including China, German, France as well as Korea.

There are unique political cultures in Korean politics. Regionalism, confucianism, anti-communism and the like would explain what Korean political cultures are. In this course, comparing western political cultures with Korean political culture, students analysis how Korean political cultures are formed and study these characteristics.
