This course is intended to understand interviews in the context of qualitative research methods and to learn research methodology in which interview data are used to study and understand social phenomenon. Through the course, the students will understand the meaning of interviews in the tradition of qualitative research method, interviews which is one of the most widely used research methods in social science research. And they will learn the methodological characteristics through case studies using interviews. In addition, they will see how to analyze and interpret interview data and the writing using the interview. This course will be helpful for students who are interested in qualitative research methodology in general as well as in social science and so get a meaningful learning opportunity, and it will be also useful for the students who are aware of quantitative research method such as statistics in a comparative sense. SOC3041 Basic Data Mining with Python 3 6 Major Bachelor 3-4 - No
In social science research to properly understand real social problems, analyze them, and present solutions, it is the very basic ability to select and analyze appropriate data to approach them. Therefore, in this subject, it aims students to acquire basic data mining techniques for solving social problems based on a sociological perspective. To this end, this class deals with how students collect and process them in various forms using Python, an open-source program. This curriculum consists of three stages: 1) understanding what data is and what types of data, 2) recognizing how to gather appropriate data, and 3) analyzing and visualizing data, and taking time to deal with both structured and unstructured data as class materials. students in this class may examine the characteristics of various types of data, such as Korean General Social Survey (KGSS), representative social science survey, and newspaper articles and Twitter. In addtion, It also teaches students to learn how to directly check various types of data for analyzing or solving social problems and process them into their own data. Based on these process, students finally learn efficient presentation techniques by applying high-level techniques such as word-cloud or topic modeling. SOC3042 Health and Urban Life Social Mechanisms Behind the Relationship Between Place and Health 3 6 Major Bachelor 2-3 English Yes
This course will examine heath status, healthcare access, and healthcare service delivery in the urban environment. It will draw on historic and contemporary research in urban sociology to frame these discussions. Specific attention will be given to age, gender, race and ethnic, and regional differences in disease trajectories and neighborhood-level social and institutional resources. The course also will explore both local and national policy implications. We will begin with micro-level considerations such as individual health and functional status. We then shift the unit of analysis to social interaction and social networks. Finally, we close with neighborhood effects research, policy implications, and cross-national applications.

This course is designed to provide the students who have previously taken Social Statistics with a vivid opportunity to analyze the survey research data for one thing, and interpret the results of analysis for another. Statistical package (SPSS) is going to be used to analyze the quantitative data (KGSS) by means of working on a variety of inferential, as well as descriptive, statistics.

This course is designed to help students obtain comprehensive and critical knowledge of the relationship between mental health and society. Readings and lectures deal with a variety of theories and empirical research of sociology of mental health. In particular, this course concerns stress process theory, labeling theory, and social construction of mental illness. Moreover, it examines a range of topics related to sociology of mental health including social stratification, gender, race, identity, family, work, and social relationship. While the course materials draw mostly from sociological theory and research, we will also draw from the richness of other disciplines. This course will place much emphasis on the link between stress and mental health. In addition, it will underscore the ways that social inequality manifests itself in the area of mental health, focusing on social patterns, processes, and outcomes, as well as the relevance of social contexts for contributing to disparities in mental health. Further, this course will examine the ways that we can reduce mental health inequality in society. In this way, our overarching objective would be to glean sociological insights into how to make our society a happier one. The main contents in this course are as follows: 1. SOC3045 Sociology of Generations 3 6 Major Bachelor 2-4 Korean Yes
This course explores the perspectives on generations, generational experiences, and the causes and methods of coexistence. In the first part, we delve into how everyday experiences related to romance, marriage, dreams, friendships, and school life differ across generations. The second part focuses on understanding generations through external and internal perspectives. We examine why and how external perspectives can lead to biases and misunderstandings about generations, while exploring how internal perspectives offer new insights into understanding generations. With a specific focus on Millennials and Generation Z, we aim to reinterpret their values, identities, and sense of belonging, analyzing how these characteristics differ from those of previous generations.The third part draws on sociological, anthropological, and psychological theories related to collaboration. With this foundation, we examine how societal conflicts and tensions between generations, prevalent in society, can be overcome from a policy and normative perspective. We analyze various cases of generational conflicts, discuss the context and effects of ageism, and collectively contemplate ways to build a sustainable future society. This course encourages both domestic and international students to participate, fostering an understanding of diverse perspectives surrounding generations and attempting a cross-cultural, sociological understanding of generations within the framework of global cultural changes.

We seek to examine theoretical and methodological foundations of the sociological understanding of international development cooperation and to explicate the major theoretical and practical issues involving the planning, delivery, outcome, and assessment of ODA. Among others, the major issues include philosophical debates on the concept of development, the diffusion of international development norms, aid-effectiveness, development and public opinion, the aid delivery structure, development contents, clarifying determinants of ODA, managing priority countries, and the assessment of aid-effectiveness.

It further aims to explore and suggest desirable human rights and normative standards for the new digital age. AI is seen as a double-edged sword in that the associated technologies could enhance human conditions and the livelihood of the marginalized but they also serve as catalysts for worsening the digital gap, gender inequality, and algorithmic bias. This course explores various AI models employing machine learning and deep learning techniques for improving human rights, and also surveys the studies demonstrating the biases within AI and the ways of detecting and minimizing them. This course will help students broaden their understanding of human rights standards for an inclusive and sustainable future of the intelligent and information society.
