Noting that no binding multilateral instrument as yet exists for the safeguarding of the endangered intangible cultural heritage, UNESCO Recommendation on the Safeguarding of Traditional Culture and Folklore of 1989 was adopted and 'Masterpieces of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity' project was initiated in 1997. This further led to the Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2003. Looking through the field of UNESCO programme with relatively short history, students will learn background knowledge on international cooperation in the field of culture and its development process as well as how interests of countries affect content of the convention and its direction of implication.
