Professor Lee Yang Hee (Department of Child and Youth) was elected head of Coordination Committee of Special Procedures at the UNCHR On June 10th. The professor has served as a Human rights Special Reporter for Myanmar. She will work next year. For the first time, a Korean was elected the head of the UN Coordination Committee of Special Procedures since the UNCHR opened. Not only that, she becomes the first Korean working for as a Human Rights Special Reporter and Asian National Reporter.
Special Procedures is one of the most important bodies the UNCHR. There are three major parts : Special Rapporteur, Independent Expert, Working Group. Experts are selected as a mandate holder to assess each country’s conditions of Human rights and also provide guidelines. Mandate holders work independently, not as a representative of groups or states. Currently, there are 14 tasks for states and 41 missions for human rights at the UNCHR.
