This class provides the Graduate-level, social-science majoring students with a variety of Advanced Statistics (besides Elementary & Intermediate Statistics), which includes, most importantly, Factor Analysis (EFA & CFA) and Covariance Structure Analysis.
SOC5063 Doing qualitative interviews 3 6 Major Master/Doctor 1-8 - No
This course is about doing qualitative interviews and in particular it deals with a qualitative research method used when social scientists plan and conduct interviewing for their study. It starts with how interviewing, which is a most commonly used research method in social science study, works for qualitative research by understanding it in the tradition of qualitative research methodology. With the knowledge of qualitative interviewing, the course deals with the planning and conducting interviews. And this process will be discussed in connection with data collection, analysis, and interpretation of qualitative studies. This course will be helpful for the students who plan qualitative research using interviews or have interview data, and if not, it will provide motivation for qualitative research to students interested in qualitative research methodology. It includes assignment for students to plan, conduct, and analyze interviews themselves, requiring active participation of students. The main contents in this course are as follows: 1. Qualitative research method and qualitative interviews 2. Ethical issues and practical constraints when doing interviews 3. Conducting qualitative interviews 4. Analyzing and interpreting interviews
SOC5064 Urban Health and Social Inequality 3 6 Major Master/Doctor 1-8 - No
This course will examine heath status, healthcare access, and healthcare service delivery in the urban environment. It will draw on historic and contemporary research in urban sociology to frame these discussions. Specific attention will be given to age, gender, race and ethnic, and regional differences in disease trajectories and neighborhood-level social and institutional resources. The course also will explore both local and national policy implications. We will begin with micro-level considerations such as individual health and functional status. We then shift the unit of analysis to social interaction and social networks.  Finally, we close with neighborhood effects research, policy implications, and cross-national applications.
SOC5065 How to write a research paper on social inequality and health 3 6 Major Master/Doctor 2-4 Korean Yes
This course is designed for sociology master's and doctoral students, providing them with experience in writing research papers in health inequality using quantitative methods. The aim of the course is to provide a 16-week intensive paper writing course to submit their papers in English. Students will develop practical and systematic research skills and learn how to conduct an in-depth analysis on the social determinants of health. This course will be particularly beneficial for those who are currently involved in a research project or wish to develop their final papers written during the course into a full-fledged research paper. Students will draft their research papers on topics such as aging and the life course, family, urban health, health disparities by gender, race/ethnicity, and urban/rural areas, and receive feedback from peers and the professor. Through this process, they will practice setting research questions, analyzing data, and honing their paper writing skills.

This course also explores the conceptual models of problem solving methods through class discussion.

This course will show how "big data" can be used to explore, analyze, understand, and address some of the most significant social problems in contemporary society and to inform police decisions. Both opportunities and challenges of big data in real-world applications will be discussed in relation to population subgroups such as children and adolescents, emerging (young) adults, older adults, women, and persons with disabilities.

Social phenomena and events which we encounter everyday are closely related with social science concepts and theories from public administration, public policy and other disciplines. Theories, frameworks, models and concepts from public administration and other social science disciplines provide lens and perspectives in understanding, explaining social problems and developing solutions for them. The students should embody and apply new perspectives and insight in understanding and in suggesting solutions for public problems occurring in the contemporary. For this goal, this class focuses on providing cases of social problems, government's policymaking, public services, and analyzing the causes and processes of, and designing solutions for the cases. We will ponder over 1) what are public problems or issues 2) why these problems should be dealt by governments or public governance, not by market or private sector 3) what policies or tools should be applied in solving problems . Drawing on case analyses of applying theories and concepts on public issues, this class aims to help students to understand the social phenomena in depth, and to develop public policies for addressing them.
