This class examines political and economic consequences caused by global warming and climate change. Sustainable energy access is necessary for social and economic development and for the improvement in quality of human well-being, and is associated with a variety of security and environmental externalities. This course introduces students to the major questions, theories, and issues in energy security. Throughout the course, we will relate our theories and historical knowledge to current issues of policy relevance. Students will leave the class with theoretical frameworks that can be used to understand various geopolitical issues such as oil price volatility, civilian nuclear technologies, natural resource ownership, energy demand and supply management, and concerns about climate change.
PSD3063 National Security and Statecraft 3 6 Major Bachelor English Yes
The course [National Security and Statecraft] is an area where security theory and security policy are combined, and particularly, the processes in which security policies are formulated and implemented is intensively explored. In other words, all factors affecting the judgment of the president and his/her staff at the apex of the national security policies are reviewed and analyzed. Various relevant variables across the first, second, and third images are analyzed, including international environment, domestic politics, leader's perception and philosophy of state affairs. The class utilizes analytic frames in various fields of social science, including sociology, psychology, economics, and statistics as well as political science. Students learn merging the theory and practice of national security through case studies, presentations, and discussions.
PSD3065 Modern European Political Culture 3 6 Major Bachelor Korean Yes
This course examines the political culture of Western Europe, from which the leading paradigms of modern and contemporary political ideologies and institutions have emerged, by focusing on the major ideological works and debates since the 20th century. This course aims to help participants understand the basic ideological framework of major political issues in Europe and explore current political issues in depth. In each semester, several major issues (eg, multiculturalism, populism, regional integration, the role of the state, etc.) are selected, and major literatures are read and discussed which inform them.
PSD3066 Technology and Democracy 3 6 Major Bachelor Korean Yes
This course deals with how the technological innovation represented by the digital revolution has an impact on democratic renovation and how it will affect the future of democracy. To this end, students can evaluate what problems are facing the current representative democracy, and whether these problems are not properly reflecting the development of technology and changes in society. Students can present their opinions on how the development of digital technology can renew the democratic institutions, and what models of democracy our society should pursue in the future.
PSD3067 The Politics of Inequality 3 6 Major Bachelor - No
This course will survey the causes and consequences of inequality from a political perspective. The readings, lectures, and assignments will not only focus on economic disparity, but also on the integrated matrix of socio-economic inequalities, such as labor market unevenness, the fissures between natives and immigrants, and gender-based divides. We will study how various forms of social inequality are shaped by existing political and economic institutions and contexts, and further influence voters and political elites’ behavior and political decisions. Lastly, students will learn how ongoing socio-economic transformations that many advanced industrial countries currently confront, such as globalization, de-industrialization, and demographic changes, re-shape existing forms of inequality. Cases addressed in this course will heavily rely on empirical research, mostly focusing on advanced industrial democracies in Europe and North America. However, students will have an opportunity to apply the theories and concepts learned in this class to enhance their understanding of the domestic context.

This course introduces main theoretical debates and contemporary issues in international security. It begins by examining why wars occur, participants’ military strategy and performance, and why wars end the way they do. The following sections cover selected traditional topics in security studies, ranging from alliances, sanctions, nuclear proliferation, technology to energy security. Students will be introduced key texts of each topic and encouraged to critically engage on how, why, when, and to whom these issue-areas affect international security.

To understand this shift and explore the overarching direction of future politics, various political theories and philosophical endeavors are being made. This course examines a range of global political phenomena, with a focal point on the three aforementioned issues, interpreting them through the lens of political theory and philosophy.

The China variables are changing the status quo in East Asia, which is not only the strategic competition between the U.S. and China, but also the global value chain. In particular, the Korean Peninsula is also a main fault line in U.S.-China relations. In particular, China has very close ties with Korea in geopolitics, geoeconomy and geo-culture, and has a weaponized interdependence relationship. The relationship between Korea and China is closely linked to politics and economy, and is easily influenced by U.S-China relation and North Korean issues. This subject is intended to focus on exploring the China and the Korean Peninsula issues. It mainly explores the basic framework of China's foreign policy, its strategic understanding of the Korean Peninsula, the variables of China's policy on the Korean Peninsula, the actual project projection of China's foreign policy on the Korean Peninsula, Korea-China relations, North Korea-China relations and inter-Korea and China triangle relations. In particular, the U.S. will conduct detailed case analysis such as North Korean denuclearization, the Korea-U.S. military alliance, East Asian multi-lateralism, and regional value chain system through methodological training to distinguish issues on the Korean Peninsula amid the U.S.-China strategic competition.
